"There are some really interesting solutions in Sailing - the regattas of the America's Cup are supported with a significant IT background.  Another similar example from Hungary is the tracking of the Lake Balaton Roundabout Solo Regatta.  On the event website you can follow paths of the competitors, the speed of the individual boats or the most important data of the stages completed.
